RSC Week 21 - Orange from Grandma's Red Needle

Another week has passed (how did that happen?).
What has happened in your sewing room?

This is the only orange that happened in my sewing room - one 9-patches from 2" squares

In between working on my UFOs - mostly quilting - I've been piecing some scrappy 16-patches. As I've mentioned earlier; I have thousands (I'm not exaggerating!) of 2" squares from swaps as well as my own. Some are used, but there are still a lot. I just have to start somewhere, right? I've yet to decide what to do with these blocks.

Seven 16-patches (2" squares) from ...

RSC, swaps, and a couple of books from With Strings Attached

Why, yes, I can write a blog post on Saturday!

I'm making it easy on myself with RSC this year.  15" x 5" Chinese coins blocks in each monthly color.   The pattern that you can see in the photo is from an old issue of Quiltmaker.

I used some orange batik to make a fabric box  to hold the mug rugs for next weekend's P.E.O. convention.   The box, or is it a bowl?, uses fusible Peltex to make it flexible but firm.  The exterior fabric is also batik.

I used to have the Fast Fun Fabric ...

RSC Week 20 - Orange / Small UFO Finish from Grandma's Red Needle

Another week has passed and it's time to show what I've been up to with orange.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I don't have any orange yardage left. There are squares in different sizes. I have a few orange 5" squares left and I just couldn't leave these cute cats in the box!

Two squares + leftover black = two mug rugs!
The quilting will happen another day.

After finishing four big UFOs (I need to take photos!), it felt good working on something small.

UFO #22 is FINISHED!

This is the table topper or candle ...

RSC Week 19 - Orange - An RSC FINISH - BOM 2026 from Grandma's Red Needle

Remember '70s has moved from my UFOs/WIPs list (UFO #14) to FINISH!

I got the idea to make a quilt in orange & brown in May 2023. That year/month, orange was the RSC color as well. Who does not remember the 1970's when orange and brown were popular? I think I had enough of these colors at that time! Orange is not amongst my favorite color, but if I had to choose between orange and pink, I know I would have a big problem! LOL
I have to say I like how this quilt turned out, mixed with ...

RSC Color for May is Orange / A Squirrel popped in from Grandma's Red Needle

Who sent the squirrel?!
...and one can't work on UFOs all the time, right?

I've been admiring the '99 Charms quilts' in RSC colors at GraceandPieceQuilting. Nancy has done a fabulous job on those quilts, using 5 inch squares from scraps, and quilted beautifully!

I got inspired!
I have a shoe box full of 5" squares and wasn't sure how to use them. Not that it was a priority to use them, but after admiring Nancy's quilts, I decided to do the same. Thanks for the inspiration, Nancy!
There were squares  in colors I have more ...

RSC April 2026 - PINK / Dear Nina is back! from Grandma's Red Needle

It has been some busy days since my previous post.
It has been yard work and decluttering. I've gone through lots of papers, tossed or shredded most. I couldn't believe how many quilt patterns I've collected; 2 big ring binders! I've kept one stitchery pattern! It has 12 cute snowmen motifs, how could I toss it?! It would make a fun winter / Christmas quilt.
Last week was 'sewing week'.

Yes! Dear Nina (Bernina 440 QE) is back from the spa in South Africa! She had a total breakdown and the dealer here nor Bernina Switzerland, did ...

Polite Society from Sew Preeti Quilts

Welcome to Polite Society.

Polite Society

Designed in EQ8 and made with the Island Batik collection, Essence, Polite Society is a precut-friendly design published in Precut Quilts Made Easy (A Quilter's World publication).

This is a beautiful collection. Look for it in your local quilt shop. For background, I used the Island Batik Neutral Egg White. The binding is another neutral named Glaze.

I quilted using a variegated thread and my trusted walking foot. You guessed it - my favorite squiggly stitch :-)

Weekly update: quiet weekend, RSC, batik blocks from With Strings Attached

I had a meeting Friday morning (good to get out and be sociable) and the rest of the weekend I was at home with just a couple of errands.  We're on the southern edge of the huge storm with only 4" of snow.  We're under a blizzard warning because it's quite windy.  I cancelled an appointment this morning and plan to stay in today.   Sewing and reading and, just maybe, catching up on a few no-time-pressure tasks.

In the studio:  I made red "coin" panels for this year's RSC project.  The pattern (shown in the photo ...

Coffee With Dad - An RSC Flimsy, Another WIP from Grandma's Red Needle

As the title says; Coffee with Dad is a Flimsy!
Viola at Familie Barwitzki challenged me to work on my UFO #26, since 26 is her birthday. Now that Swirling Stars is on hold, waiting (forever! due to shipping error from the online shop!) for ordered quilting thread, I accepted the challenge.

In my previous post I mentioned I had too many blocks for one quilt.
That is absolutely not true! I don't know where my head was, or better say brain (it must have melted in the heat these days!), when I figured out I need 36 coffee ...

February Sewing So Far! from The Modern Diary

My Lupine and Laughter quilt top is a flimsy.  I like how this one turned out in my colors.  Different from any others I have done for sure.

I decided since I made Hazel an H is for Happy doll quilt that I should make an I one for Indigo.  I had to "design" the I myself and it is not quite as good as the H's, but it works.  I do love how the quilting came out and I did that myself too.  Since I was gifting it to Indie for Valentine's Day I decided I better ...

RSC January 2026 - Week 5 - Blue from Grandma's Red Needle

January Blues continue into February.
This post was meant for previous Saturday, but that didn't happen.

UFO #12 - Star Streams is finished!

It was supposed to be a RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge), but I changed my mind and made it in blue and white instead.
Quilted in crosshatch design with 1.5" between each seam

Pieced backing.
The photo didn't turn out the best. Here's another photo, after the backing was done.

RSC 2026 Week 4 - January is BLUE from Grandma's Red Needle

A new year is here, and so is RSC - Rainbow Scrap Challenge - hosted by Angela at SuperScrappy

I have yet to decide how much I'll participate in the RSC this year. Definitely not as much as the previous years.
I'm drowning in RSC blocks from the last 3 years and my goal is to make those into flimsies (some are done already, it has been some busy weeks sewing). It's even better if they can be finished, at least some of them!

Last year, I did part of Sherri McConnell's BOM 2025 in RSC colors. I ...

Friday check in: final finish, Annual Reckoning, a few goals, top-along, RSC from With Strings Attached

Happy New Year!

I managed to stay up until midnight on New Year's Eve.   I watched a new movie and an old one on Netflix.  New: Wake Up Dead Man, the third (and best, so far) in the Knives Out series.  Old:  How to Steal a Million with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. A fun caper from 1966.

As I watched I quilted and bound the golden bowties wall hanging.  (I left for Florida with it basted. I was afraid I'd make a mess of the quilting. But it turned out okay! I hand-sewed the binding to ...
